Spring 2018: First Season Sires Creating an impression

The four-year-old spring campaign started on the opening weekend of February with Belharbour, Ballinaboola and Tallow staging the first races of this category.

So far this spring 21 individual stallions have sired the winners of the 31 four-year-olds who have won up to last weekend’s fixture.

The ill-fated Jeremy along with Overbury stud resident stallion Kayf Tara and Martaline who stands in France in Haras de Montaigu, have all sired three four-year-old winners each.

First season sire Aizavoski, who stands at Arctic Tack stud in Co. Wexford has an impressive strike rate to date as he has sired two winners from three runners with Belharbour winner Envious Editor (pictured) as well as Brewers Project who won at Ballyarthur.

Another sire whose progeny has made a name for itself on the track is the ill-fated Fame And Glory who has also sired two winners with Deja Vue and Commander Of Fleet as well as two promising runner-up’s. Outside of the point-to-point field he has sired two impressive bumper winners with the Noel Meade-trained Young Ted and the Stuart Crawford-trained Largy Glory.

The Beeches stud resident stallion Sans Frontieres caught many people’s attention when he produced his first winner with Treasure Dillon to take the four-year-old maiden at Durrow having also produced Grange Castle Lad to finish second on his debut at Kirkistown in March.

Doyen, who sired Rapid Escape and Battleoverdoyen last Spring to win their four-year-old maidens, produced another eye-catching winner with his first four-year-old winner this season when the Gordon Elliot-trained Andy Dufresne created a big impression on his debut at Borris House before being sold at the Tattersalls Ireland Cheltenham Festival sale for £330,000.

The success story of Irish point-to-point graduates is continually growing each year with their progression to track success highlighting their value to potential new owners and trainers so it is unsurprising to see the four-year-old trade remaining as strong this season as so far 12 winners from the spring campaign have made a combined turnover of €2.5 million in the sales’ ring.
