Track Biography:

The North Down point-to-point moved to its current course at Kirkistown in 2006 and have held three meetings each season since then. The course is located towards the eastern side of the Ards Peninsula near the village of Portavogie.  It’s in an area that was used as an airfield during the war and hence is very flat and well drained.

Kirkistown is a very level left handed course run over a circuit just short of a mile. Runners jump two fences close to the spectator’s area and a further three along the back straight.

Our November fixture is normally the final meeting of the autumn calendar in the northern area. Conversely, our February and March fixtures are two of the earliest in the northern spring calendar.

Some of the leading graduates from our point-to-point include Simonsig, Petit Mouchoir & Agus A Vic.

Warren Ewing is always a handler to follow in four-year-old races around here and he has entered two horses here including the French-bred Favori De Champdou that is a full-brother to a three-time winner in France who won a decent pot at Auteuil in the Autumn. Colin Bowe has already won a four-year-old maiden this year, and his young horses are clearly in good health, with the market giving the best guide as to what is expected from these newcomers.

LADY MAUREEN caught the eye at Tyrella last month when she stayed-on very strongly to get herself into a challenging position coming the last. The daughter of Robin Des Champs, who had failed to complete on two other previous efforts, unfortunately came down at that obstacles, however she could well have gone close otherwise. Quivvy Lough ran well as a four-year-old and may be more at home now in this company, whilst Rubiana was placed on her penultimate start.

GOLD DES BOIS held every chance when coming down at the final fence at Templencarriga on his debut last month, and he will be expected to make amends here for Peter Fahy and Nigel Baring, an owner whose colours have previously been carried to success in this region. Eclair Surf was not beaten far at Lisronagh and is an obvious alternative, whilst Irish Hill would have to be given serious consideration on what he produced around here in November. But the well bred son of Presenting was unable to get involved at Tattersalls Farm more recently.

One of a number of potential red-hot open lightweight races which could see a rematch between UCELLO CONTI and Gwencily Berbas, who were fighting out the finish of the Hunter Chase at Thurles last month, until the latter departed whilst very much involved. Balnaslow is the reigning Aintree Foxhunters champion but he pulled-up in this corresponding race 12 months when also making his seasonal reappearance, leaving Kruzhlinin, Arbre De Vie, Lac Fontana and Measureofmydreams as the many dangers.

ACHY BREAKY HEART was a convincing winner of her maiden at Tyrella last month and it is hard to luck past her doubling up in this. Jasper Bear is back from a breaking having won at Dowth Hall in the autumn, whilst Clondaw Nell won a British point at Adlington by 15 lengths but struggled more recently and has since changed connections.

Preview

TOUCHPAD moves into older maiden company for the first time here and that should allow him to follow up on two promising runs to date, including when third to Springfield Fox at Boulta, a horse that has since more than advertised the form of that race. Pyrios is sure to have come on for his stable debut at Ballinaboola last Sunday, and he is rated 108 over hurdles, ensuring he has to be given serious respect. Royal Drumlee, Diegos Way and Briggites Hill are others for the shortlist.
